Therapy Cats

A Therapy cat is a certified pet that’s trained to help people in medically beneficial ways. They’re often used in nursing homes, schools, retirement homes, hospices, and other human service care facilities. Therapy cats can help people cope with anxiety, illness, and disorders by providing companionship, relieving loneliness, and sometimes helping with depression and certain phobias. They can also help people emotionally and physically by reducing stress, anxiety, and increasing their mobility.

Therapy cats are often calm and mild-mannered, and can stay calm during stressful periods or medical emergencies. They’re also relatively low-maintenance, and sleep up to 18 hours a day, making them ideal snuggling partners for those who aren’t able to be very active.

Therapy cats are different from service animals and emotional support animals, even though all three are assistance animals. They differ in their jobs or functions, and are protected by different laws.

ESA Support Cats

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT CATS PROVIDES COMFORT
An emotional support animal can be of many species, including cats. An emotional support animal or ESA does not require any special training. An ESA is there to provide a person with an emotional or mental disability the support they need to live a normal or better life.

Cats can be beneficial as an emotional support animal as some breeds of felines are very human orientated. This means they love to spend time with their human companion. Some of these cat breeds include the Persian, the Ragdoll, the Abyssinian, the Burmese, the Maine Coon and the Exotic Shorthair. However, that doesn’t mean a mixed breed feline (Moggy) cannot be just as loyal and dedicated to their human.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT CAT REGISTRATION
Although it is not required by law to register your feline as an ESA, some people choose to do so for its many benefits. These include having access to custom ID cards, certificates and even vests to identify the cat as an ESA.

Companion Cats

A companion cat is a domestic cat that is kept as a companion animal in the home. Companion animals are considered family and have more legal protections than other animals. The ASPCA defines companion animals as domesticated animals that can meet their physical, emotional, behavioral, and social needs in the home. Companion cats improve mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Assistance Cats

Cats are not legally recognized as “service animals”. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) only allows dogs and miniature horses to be considered legal service animals. However, some people refer to cats that are trained to perform tasks as “service cats”. and often referred to instead as “assistance cats”. These cats can alert their owners to medical emergencies, help people with epilepsy, or calm people with PTSD. They can also help people with disabilities navigate, reach objects, and walk more easily even reported to detect seizures, migraines even blood sugar and more.
